Fox News 7/21/2010 - Arizona urged a federal judge Tuesday to reject the Obama administration’s challenge to its tough new immigration law, arguing the border state is acting within its powers.

Gov. Jan Brewer said President Obama is trying to prevent Arizona from protecting its citizens with the Justice Department suit, one of seven seeking to have the new law blocked before it goes into effect July 29.

The Tuesday filing said illegal immigration and a lack of comprehensive enforcement by the federal government has caused “crushing personal, environmental, criminal, and financial burdens” on Arizona.

“Arizona merely seeks to assist with the enforcement of existing federal immigration laws in a constitutional manner,” lawyers for Brewer said. “It is that is attempting to impose immigration policies and priorities that contravene and conflict with federal law and unambiguous congressional intent.” Read Full Story

It’s ridiculous that a school would fire a professor without even giving him a chance to defend himself when he simply taught Catholic beliefs in a class about Catholic beliefs.”

AP – WASHINGTON — The Obama administration’s recent move to drop rhetorical references to Islamic radicalism is drawing fire in a new report warning the decision ignores the role religion can play in motivating terrorists.

Several prominent counterterror experts are challenging the administration’s shift in its recently unveiled National Security Strategy, saying the terror threat should be defined in order to fight it.

The question of how to frame the conflict against Al Qaeda and other terrorists poses a knotty problem. The U.S. is trying to mend fences with Muslim communities while toughening its strikes against militant groups.

FoxNews.com – NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in a recent interview that his “foremost” mission as the head of America’s space exploration agency is to improve relations with the Muslim world.

Allie Martin – OneNewsNow – The American Family Association (AFA) is sounding a warning about a campaign finance bill before the U.S. Senate.

H.R. 5175, the bill is known as the “DISCLOSE Act,” has been passed by the House and is expected to come up in the Senate this week.

According to Bryan Fischer, director of issue analysis for AFA, the “Democracy is Strengthened by Casting Light on Spending in Elections Act” would muzzle pro-family groups.

“This is a campaign finance reform — quote, end quote — bill. what it’s going to do is…censor and muzzle the voice of pro-life and pro-family organizations leading up to both primary and general elections,” Fischer explains. “But the Democrats carved out a major exception for all their union buddies. The Sierra Club has an exemption, and the AARP has an exemption.”

OneNewsNow.com – Charlie Butts – The European Court of Human Rights has heard arguments in an appeal of a decision that would ban crosses in Italian schools, and a final ruling should come within a couple of months.

Last November, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that crucifixes in Italian public schools violate religious and education freedoms. But the Alliance Defense Fund represented 33 members of the European Parliament who appealed the decision. Allied attorney Roger Kiska of the Slovak Republic was on hand in Strasbourg, France for arguments in the case. (See earlier story)

Fox News is reporting that a group of Republican senators have asked President Obama to clarify reports that he is drafting a plan to issue blanket amnesty for millions of people who are in the U.S. illegally. The plan would reportedly be unilateral in nature — circumventing Congress entirely as the administration struggles to gain support on Capitol Hill for what the administration calls “comprehensive immigration reform” — and be issued in the form of an executive order.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Illinois State Police has revoked the appointment of the agency’s first Muslim chaplain, citing only information revealed during a background check. A national Muslim advocacy group Wednesday blamed the move on Islamophobia.

Kifah Mustapha, a Chicago-area imam, was appointed the agency’s first Muslim chaplain in December. Community groups had praised Mustapha’s appointment as a nod to the growing diversity among the agency’s nearly 2,000 officers.

But within days, the appointment came under criticism from the Investigative Project on Terrorism, a Washington-based think tank.

The group alleged that Mustapha was linked to the Palestine Committee of the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood, a popular movement in the Muslim world that advocates the formation of Islamic governments in the Middle East. It also alleged he raised money for the Holy Land Foundation, a now-defunct Islamic charity whose founders were sentenced last year for funneling money to the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Fox News 6/18/10 WASHINGTON — Fighting homegrown terrorism by monitoring Internet communications is a civil liberties trade-off the U.S. government must make to beef up national security, the nation’s homeland security chief said Friday.

As terrorists increasingly recruit U.S. citizens, the government needs to constantly balance Americans’ civil rights and privacy with the need to keep people safe, said Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

But finding that balance has become more complex as homegrown terrorists have used the Internet to reach out to extremists abroad for inspiration and training. Those contacts have spurred a recent rash of U.S.-based terror plots and incidents.

“The First Amendment protects radical opinions, but we need the legal tools to do things like monitor the recruitment of terrorists via the Internet,” Napolitano told a gathering of the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy.

Napolitano’s comments suggest an effort by the Obama administration to reach out to its more liberal, Democratic constituencies to assuage fears that terrorist worries will lead to the erosion of civil rights. Read Full Story
